Writing is A City.
Skyscrapers of synonyms dominate the skyline. Metaphorical rivers meander through nouns made of concrete. At its centre there is a maze of little streets and squares made up of pronouns, modifiers and conjunctions. Go further out and you’ll find the suburbs. Our scientific and technical language is well-organised, yes, but it all looks quite the same which brings its own navigational challenges. There are always dozens of ways to get where you want to go: some quicker, some prettier, some cleaner, some quieter.
In language, when we decide to go down one path rather than another, we show the tourist troupes passing through our thoughts a whole different part of town. The words we choose to use matter.
We’re committed to being the tour guides our students deserve. We want to show them the best ways to orient themselves in the the complicated metropolis of language by building their vocabulary, communication skills and creativity. In doing so, we construct learners who are never at a loss for words; they know exactly the right one for every situation.
