An Interview with Adrian

University Admissions

As I entered my final year of A Level study at sixth form college in the UK, deciding to study medicine was easy. Science and Maths are my strongest subjects and I find learning about the processes and pathways of the human body in order to help others fascinating. With my predicted 4A*s, I knew that I would make the grade. What was more difficult was putting together an application that showed I had the right mindset. I was determined to aim for Medicine courses at top UK institutions but needed some guidance on how to stand out from the crowd.

While in Hong Kong, I had been having regular private English lessons with Louise from Passion for Language for three years. Luckily, she had kept in touch with me when I went to study in the UK and knew just how to help when I mentioned my plans for further study. She introduced me to Emma and Andrew from the Passion for Language admissions team.

Personal Statement Preparation

Emma Humphries, a graduate of UCL, used her experience to clean up my personal statement. She knew exactly what admissions officers would be looking for. During our three sessions, Emma listened carefully as I presented my ideas before helping me frame them convincingly in writing. We communicated regularly as Emma reviewed my drafts and suggested improvements. She did a tremendous job by transforming what I had written into what I wanted to say.

Oxbridge Interview Coaching

The interviews were particularly daunting for me. Even though I could already explain why I wanted to study medicine, the Oxbridge style of interviewing required me to show aptitude for the subject by tackling difficult questions in a specific way. Andrew, helped me practice showing my thought process by talking out loud while answering questions. Before each of our sessions, he would send me an academic article, give me fifteen minutes to prepare and then would ask me to summarise the material in two minutes. Each time, I improved with his advice and by the time it came to the interview, I felt so much more confident and well-prepared.

I’m pleased to say that I will be starting my course in September and hope it will be the first step towards my dream of becoming a surgeon. Passion for Language’s support made a big difference to my family and I since secured an offer on a course that is notoriously competitive. I recommend Passion for Language’s coaching to high school students who are looking towards universities with high expectations.
